Laryngeal Mirror
Voice change such as hoarseness could be due to pharyngeal inflammation or a lesion of the vocal chords. Sometimes it is useful to view the post-nasal space.
Currently fiber-optic instruments provide a direct view of the area. They are usually coupled to a television monitor, and can provide a hard copy photograph.
In the past however ENT surgeons used indirect laryngoscopy. This involved insertion of the mirror into the back of the mouth. Gagging was avoided by spraying with local anaesthetic.
